Big Idea: Negative numbers help us to model many real world situations.
Essential Question: How do I put positive and negative numbers in order?
1) Describe what positive numbers, negative numbers, and 0 mean in terms of
a) Keeping score in MathMania.
Positive, negative, and 0 terms mean in MathMania is, which ever team answers a question correctly gains points which are positive numbers, and whoever answers a question incorrectly, is losing points which are negative numbers. When a team is on 0 it means that, the team is losing the same points as they gain which makes their score a 0.
b) temperature reading.
When reading the temperature you use positive, negative, and 0 terms to see if the readings are below or above 0. When a temperature is above 0 it means the temperature will be a positive number. When a temperature is below 0 its a negative number which makes it freezing. When a temperature is 0 it means that it is in the middle of the positive and negative readings. Starting from 0 and below the temperature will be freezing.
2) Describe how you can compare the following types of numbers to decide which is greater. Use examples to illustrate your thinking.
a) two positive numbers.
Two decide whether two positive numbers are greater to one another you have to see which number is farther away from 0 and which number is greater. For example- 53 >35. Since 53 is farthest away from 0 its greatest and 53 is a larger number than 35.
b) two negative numbers.
To determine which negative number is greater you have to see which number is closest to 0, that number will be greater than the other number. For example- -4 > -10. -4 is greater because its closest to 0 and -10 is farthest from 0.
c) a positive number and a negative number.
To determine if a positive number is greater than a negative you will have to know that a positive number is always greater than negative since its less than 0. For example- 5 >-9. Since 5 is a negative number it will always be greater than a negative number like -9.
3)Describe how to locate numbers on a number line. Use examples to illustrate your thinking. Be sure to include positive and negative numbers as well as fractions and decimals in your examples.
To find a number on a number line, you will have to know that the positive numbers will be on the right of 0 and the negative numbers will be on the left of zero. to locate a number like -9 you will have to look on the left of 0 since its a negative number. To locate a number like 9 you will have to look at the right of 0 since its a positive number.
Summary:
We learned how to analyze numbers in MathMania , and looked at temperatures. Also we have learned whether one number is greater than one another.
